When is comes to managing pain, researchers say common painkillers can be as effective as opioids.
Researchers studied more than 400 people treated for sprains and broken bones in emergency departments.
They were randomly assigned to receive either non-opioid pain killers or one of three variations of opioid-based pain killers.
After two hours, the doctors asked the people to rate their pain on an 11-point scale and compared their responses.
They found that people who received a combination of ibuprofen and Tylenol reported as much relief from pain as patients who received opioid-based painkillers.
More than 500,000 people have died from drug overdoses since 2000, many from opioid overdoses. Opioid addiction and abuse is viewed as an epidemic.
