After 73 Years, Local WWII Hero To Be Buried In South Florida

A World War Two veteran will finally be laid to rest in South Florida.

The man, known as Richard "Tiny" Sowell, was killed by a Japanese mortar in July 1944 at the age of 21.

His unidentified remains had been found in 1949 and buried in Hawaii.

Earlier this year, DNA retrieved from the remains matched a sample submitted by a nephew in West Palm Beach.

Tiny was one of about 200 people from Palm Beach County who died in a war that swept carnage and heartbreak across the breadth of the globe and brought it right down to the street corner.

Palm Beach County now has about a million and a half residents. Back then it had perhaps 100,000. That made the deaths far more personal.

He will be buried Friday in a family plot with full military honors.
