Sen. Rubio Pushing For Child Tax Reform To Prove He Supports Families

A Florida senator is proposing to double the child tax credit as a part of overall tax reform.

Republican Marco Rubio made his pitch in Washington saying he wants to make the credit refundable against payroll tax liability.

Rubio said it's a chance for he and his colleagues to support the most important institution in society: the family.

"We are on the verge of achieving [the child tax reform]," Rubio told Think Progress. “...In fact, one of the thing that’s helped us, is the reality that without a significant increase in the child tax credit, there will be no tax relief for middle class families. We have to do it at this point.”

Separately, Rubio has called for an expansion of up to $2,500, in addition to the current $1,000.

Democrats proposed their reform strategy earlier in October, which also expands the CTC.

That plan, 'The Stronger Way Act,' and introduced by Sens. Tammy Baldwin (WI) and Cory Booker (NJ), would also make the credit refundable, but hitches the inflation and increases the rate at which it is phased in.
