Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCS) are preparing for a new, Mega-Magnet school.
The county was one of four Florida school districts to win a $15 million grant from The U.S. Education Department's Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP).
The primary aim of the MSAP grant is to eliminate, reduce, or prevent minority-group isolation in elementary and secondary schools while strengthening students’ academic achievement.
MDCS will receive funding over five years to implement programming that supports the development and implementation of magnet schools that increase racial integration and promote academic opportunity and excellence.
The district plans to restructure the Barbara Goleman school in Miami Lakes to hold the new magnet programs.
Those programs will include:
- Information systems technology
- Digital marketing
- Financial technology
- Cybersecurity
- An advanced placement STEM course
Miami Southridge Senior High will also be converted into a re-envisioned all-academy, magnet school with boundaries Its new magnets will include:
- Business Innovation & Management
- Design, Animation & Gaming
- Mobile Application Development
Magnet school programs offer unique courses focusing on students’ special interests, talents, and abilities. They include:
- International Programs
- Liberal Arts
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics)
- Virtual Learning
- Visual & Performing Arts
