Rep. Carlos Curbelo Wants To See Bump Stocks Bumped Out Of The Picture

Florida Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo wants to see Bump Stocks gone.

On Tuesday, Curbelo filed legislation along with Massachusetts Democrat Seth Moulton to prohibit the manufacturing, sale or possession of the bump stock accessory throughout the nation.

The bill focuses on accessories (bump stocks) that speed the rate of fire for a semiautomatic without turning it into a fully automatic weapon. The language is broad:

[The bill will] prohibit the manufacture, possession, or transfer of any part or combination of parts that is designed and functions to increase the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle but does not convert the semiautomatic rifle into a machine gun, and for other purposes.

Bump stocks were thrust into the spotlight after investigators discovered 12 rifles fitted with the devices in a 32nd-floor room at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, where a gunman opened fire on concertgoers.

“This common-sense legislation will ban devices that blatantly circumvent already existing law without restricting Second Amendment rights,” Curbelo said in a statement, referring to a 1986 law banning automatic rifles.

The Florida Republican and Massachusetts Democrat were joined by 18 co-sponsors from both parties.

Cuberlo is one of 11 Republican politicians who are open to gun control.
