A woman is dead after she allegedly ran her car over a Miami Beach police officer Sunday night.
A woman in her early 20s was driving a black BMW when she crashed into a vehicle on 12th Street and Ocean Drive, police say. The woman then allegedly fled the scene.
"The car was coming westbound from Ocean on 12th and went through the red light, struck an occupied car on 12th and Collins," said Miami Beach Police Chief Dan Oates.
"At some point, the driver made a decision to speed away and she continued west on 12th Street."
According to police, as the suspect was fleeing the scene, she struck another vehicle on Lincoln Drive.
When police arrived and asked the driver to get out of the car, the driver allegedly slammed the accelerator and ran over a police officer.
Police officers then fired several shots at the driver's black BMW, striking the female driver.
Both the driver and the officer were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.
The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. The officer is listed in stable condition.
The name of the suspect has not been released.
