Miami Man Arrested For Breaking Into, Taking Nap At Key Largo Home

A Miami man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly admitting to breaking into a Key Largo resort neighborhood home and taking a nap.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the Ocean Reef Club neighborhood just before 6 p.m. after a security officer reported a suspicion man on a bicycle pedaling away from him after he asked the man who he was and what he was doing there.

The man, identified as 22-year-old Michael Brandt was spotted a short time after, but refused to stop, dropped his bike and jumped into the water, swimming away, deputies said.

While investigating a burglary at a home on Exuma Road, deputies learned there was a day laborer who disappeared from his job site at the resort. Deputies said Brandt fit the description of the missing worker.

A deputy soon saw Brandt near where he had jumped into the water and told the man he wanted to speak to him. Brandt ran and jumped back into the water, swimming away again, deputies said.

As deputies were searching for Brandt, a state wildlife officer found him standing in the roadway and took him into custody.

Deputies said Brandt admitted to entering a house and taking a nap in the cool AC. Deputies said Brandt also admitted to taking money that was in the house.

Brandt faces multiple charges of burglary, grand theft, criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
