Man, 73, Banned From FL Beaches After Handing Out Cards Seeking Sugar Baby

A 73-year-old Daytona Beach man has been banned from Volusia County beaches after a parent complained he was handing out business cards to girls that read "Sugardaddy seeking his sugarbaby."

A 16-year-old girl told officials Basaraba handed her 18-year-old friend a card Saturday that featured an email address and a picture of a young woman sitting on an older man's lap.

Basaraba was allegedly also wearing a t-shirt with a similar message, pictured below:

Volusia County Beach Safety Capt. Tammy Marris says officials are making Richard Basaraba stay off all county beaches for six months for violating an ordinance that prohibits soliciting on beach property.

Basaraba allegedly says he's "devastated" by what he considers an overreaction. Fox 8 reports Basaraba told police he was not trying to make the girls do anything inappropriate.

“I read in the paper about men who have sex with underage women and their life is gone,” he said. “I can show you my bank account. I don’t have any assets. I don’t have money, just enough to live. I don’t have money for a sugar baby.”

Basaraba says he threw out the business cards and deleted the email account and a Facebook account where he posted pictures of women in bikinis.

He was not arrested because police did not witness him handing out the business cards.
