Civil Rights Attorney Criticizes Broward County's Handling Of Rape Cases

A nationally-known civil rights attorney is criticizing the way rape cases are handled in Broward County.

Gloria Allred appeared at a Fort Lauderdale news conference Wednesday, joined by Erica Berg, the woman who had accused former Miami Hurricanes and Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin of rape

No charges were filed in that case and Allred says she is sending a letter to the Broward state attorney, urging a change in the office's policy on rape.

She claims an urgent change is needed and believes that the current policy is likely to prevent some women from reporting rapes in the future.

She also believes the current policy discriminates against women, and that they might be reluctant to report crime.
