South FL Officials Love The Spotlight, Offer Incentives To Film Industry

Local governments want their cities to stay in the spotlight so badly, that officials are offering incentives to television and film production companies to keep their projects in the state.

A state program that offered nearly $300 million in film incentives ended last year.

Hoping to keep more production companies from leaving Florida, Miami-Dade County and the city of North Miami now offer tens of thousands of dollars in subsidies for TV, film and video productions within their borders.

The city of Miami Beach is also allegedly drafting similar incentives.

The head of Miami-Dade County's film office, Sandy Lighterman, says incentives could help support smaller production professionals employed in Florida.

Lighterman says other Miami-area cities also are considering film incentive programs.
