Fort Pierce Man Drives Car Filled With Propane Tanks Into Ex's Apartment

Police say a 31-year-old man rammed his car filled with propane tanks into his ex-girlfriend's apartment building.

Fort Pierce police spokesman Ed Cunningham says 31-year-old Carl Philbert died in the crash.

Authorities say Philbert went to his ex’s home on Palm Avenue in Fort Pierce Tuesday morning and argued with his ex. He then allegedly left the area, put four propane tanks in the car and then drove his car through his ex’s front window.

Five adults and a toddler escaped uninjured through a back door of the building following the collision. In all, 13 adults and five children live in the building. All were able to get out safely though one elderly woman was trapped on the second floor. She is now safe.

Authorities are not releasing the name Philbert's ex. They say Philbert had a history of domestic issues with the woman.

The building has been declared structurally unsound and the Red Cross is helping the residents find a place to stay.

It’s unclear when anybody may be able to move back in.
