Homestead to Open Sickle Cell Research and Care Clinic

A city councilman turns his struggle with a disease into giving back to the community, with a research and care clinic in Homestead.

In honor of Sickle Cell Awareness Day, City of Homestead Councilman Jimmy Williams, making the announcement the city has been awarded $200,000 in state funds to launch a facility in the area.  Councilman Williams says he suffers from the disease and saw a need for a clinic in Miami-Dade.

"The disparities of going into E.R.'s and trying to find doctors that actually know about the disease is very difficult to do in South Florida," said Councilman Williams.

He says our state has the highest number of patients who suffer from sickle cell.  

According to the Centers for Disease Control, sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder.
