Miami Doctor Behind Bars And Accused Of Elder Abuse After Patient's Death

A well-known Miami Doctor is arrested and accused of elder abuse and operating two unlicensed facilities in the Keys.

Dr. Raul Tamayo, 66, was taken into custody at his Miami Beach home Mornday morning. Police say the doctor was not providing proper care at the facilities, and was being paid by Medicare for services he was not actually providing.

Tamayo and Maristan

Also charged is 47-year-old Amarylis Maristan -- a woman who has no medical training, but investigators say worked under Tamayo's supervision as a caregiver.

According to authorities, the duo operated two unlicensed elder living facilities in Monroe County, one from April 2016 until October 2016  at 173 Ocean Drive in Plantation Key and one from October 2016 until December 2016 at 8 Avenue B in Key Largo.

Investigators also say one 85-year-old patient died after residing at one of the facilities.

The Florida Department of Children and Families received a complaint from a local hospital after an elderly woman was brought into the hospital in cardiac arrest, covered in urine with severe bed sores, some infected.

The victim was revived and transferred to Homestead Hospital for treatment where she died the following day.

Tamayo has been charged with two counts of neglect of an elderly or disabled adult. Bond was set at $200,000. Maristan is reportedly facing the same charges.
