Marlins Give Jose Fernandez's Family Insurance Money

The Miami Marlins received insurance money from the MLB following the death of Jose Fernandez. Now, that money is being turned over to the late baseball star's family.

Ordinarily, players are given $1 million when a player dies, but the Marlins were given $700,000 for Fernandez. That money was put in a trust for Fernandez's 3-month-old daughter, Penelope.

The Marlins ace pitcher was killed in a boating accident last September. At the time of the crash, the player had cocaine and alcohol in his system.

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has confirmed that he is currently working on a statue to Fernandez that will be placed somewhere near or at Marlins Park.
