State Law Enforcement Official Charged with Grand Theft of Phones

A Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) official is charged with grand theft and organized scheme to defraud charges.

Investigators say cellphone consultant John Leland Goelz used FDLE's acocunt to purchase mobile devices for himself and his family.

Agency spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger said in a news release Thursday that the agency investigated Goelz after an employee had trouble getting a phone upgrade.

The agency's contract includes a certain number of mobile device upgrades at discounted rates each year. The investigation revealed that Goelz purchased 10 cellphones that should have been used to upgrade FDLE phones.

The contract allows for deep discounts resulting in a $5,000 loss to the agency. Plessinger says Goelz was arrested Tuesday night and in the process of being fired from FDLE.
