Local Educators Join Day Of Action In Support Of Public Education

Teachers across the country are coming together today  for a national 'Day of Action to protect public education from the incoming administration.  Over 2,000 schools are taking part in the events organized by the national group 'Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools’.

The rallies call on the Senate to reject Donald Trump's Secretary of Education nominee, Betsy DeVos. Karla Hernandez-Mats with United Teachers of Miami-Dade says DeVos is not qualified for the job and will only dismantle public education just liked she did with her reforms in Michigan. "This is a person that has never taught a day in her lifetime has no education background, never been a teacher, an administrator.  Even her reforms in Michigan have not proven to be effective."

Hernandez-Mats says they want to protect all students from Trump's rhetoric and want to ensure they have access to public education despite where they're from. "We just want our children to be safe because we know children cannot learn if they feel angst, if they are coming to school and are scared that when they go home their parents may not be there or they themselves may be picked up by an immigration's agent."

Miami-Dade will hold its rally at Miami Jackson Senior High School Thursday January 19, at 4:30 P.M.
