A sunbather on Cocoa Beach is recovering after a large rental umbrella, lofted by a wind gust, impaled her leg.
According to Cocoa Beach police, the wind kept whipping the umbrella so emergency crews had to use bolt cutters to remove the canopy before they could pull the pole out of her leg.
"Although officers responded, the matter was a medical call and handled by the Cocoa Beach Fire Department and Brevard County Fire Rescue," according to the police spokesperson.
Last year a South Carolina beachgoer was killed when a loose umbrella stabbed her through the heart.
