NASA says the Hubble Space Telescope has gone into 'sleep mode' after suffering a malfunction of one of its gyroscopes.

Scientists say the Hubble could potentially continue to function with just two remaining gyroscopes which helps point the telescope.

Or perhaps NASA will send astronauts to repair the expensive eye in the sky.

The Hubble was last visited by astronauts in 2009, after launching in 1990.

NASA says there's a greater than 70 percent chance Hubble will continue to operate under this configuration through 2035.

"We do not see Hubble as being on its last legs, we do think it's a very capable observatory, (poised) to do exciting science with other observatories in orbit and those that will join us in orbit," according to Patrick Crouse, project manager for the Hubble Space Telescope mission.

Its successor, the much more powerful Webb Space Telescope, was launched in 2021.

Or perhaps NASA will send astronauts to repair the Hubble.
