California workers could be the first in the country to have the “right to disconnect” from work during off-hours.
A new proposed bill would guarantee workers in the Golden State "uninterrupted personal and family time by giving them the ability to disengage from emails, texts and calls during non-work hours." The bill's sponsor says, “Workers shouldn’t be punished for not being available 24/7 if they’re not being paid for 24 hours of work.”
If passed, the "right to disconnect" law would be enforced by the state Department of Labor, which could fine employers $100 per incident.
