The Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration are testing new "self-service" screening-at-speed technology at a Las Vegas airport.
The new setup requires fewer TSA agents at the security checkpoint and more streamlined operations saving minutes per traveler screening.
Passengers are greeted with a virtual agent who assists them by answering questions, and officers can monitor X-ray machines remotely.
There are also automated conveyors for any luggage that needs more screening.
The pilot program for the “Screening at Speed” system is designed to eventually enable passengers to pass through the airport security screening process with minimal contact from TSA officers.
Screening at Speed Program Manager John Fortune says, “Like self-ordering kiosks at fast food and sit-down restaurants, self-service screening allows passengers in the Trusted Traveler Program to complete the security screening process on their own.”
