Poison Control Flooded with Semaglutide Overdose Calls

Poison control centers are seeing a sharp uptick in overdose calls about weight loss injectable drug semaglutide.

From January through November of this year, America's Poison Centers says it received close to three-thousand calls that involve semaglutide.

That's a more than 15-fold increase since 2019.

In 94% of calls, semaglutide was the sole substance reported.

Some needed to be hospitalized for severe stomach issues but recovered after being given intravenous fluids and nausea medications.

Semaglutide was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2017. It is sold as Ozempic when used for diabetes and Wegovy when used for weight loss. Even when used as directed by a doctor, people can have stomach and bowel side effects, including nausea, vomiting and constipation, especially when they start the drugs.The FDA approved semaglutide in 2017 for weight loss via Wegovy and with Ozempic for diabetes.
