A massive crocodile was caught swimming in the ocean under the Fisher Family Pier in Pompano Beach. However, Pompano Beach is back open to swimmers on Wednesday with ample warnings posted.
According to the Florida Wildlife Commission,
American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) are a shy and reclusive species. They live in coastal areas throughout the Caribbean, and occur at the northern end of their range in south Florida. They live in brackish or saltwater areas, and can be found in ponds, coves, and creeks in mangrove swamps.
Most importantly, the FWC states,
The diet of the American crocodiles primarily consists of small mammals, birds, frogs, turtles, and fish (Fishman et al. 2009).
Pythons, Burmese and the like, however,...that's definitely something to be worried about! So....BE CAREFUL in South Florida waters.
