Governor Ron DeSantis wants to give border patrol officers the right to use deadly force against drug smugglers armed with fentanyl.

DeSantis said yesterday that, if elected president, he would authorize such force against drug smugglers cutting through the border wall. DeSantis claims drug cartels are responsible for poisoning and killing more Americans than any other group or country.

DeSantis said, "We will lean in against the Mexican drug cartels because they are poisoning this country. If they try breaking into our country with fentanyl, we are going to authorize deadly force. They are going to end up stone cold dead at the border." He added, “Buckle up. There’s a new sheriff in town on Jan. 20, 2025.”

CBP agents and officers may use deadly force only when the agent someone poses an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury to the agent, officer, or to another person.

Asked to clarify how his administration would tell the difference between drug smugglers and innocent migrants, DeSantis, who was in the military told NBC News that the “people in Iraq ... all looked the same.”
