As of today, Americans can only purchase LED light bulbs from retailers due to Department of Energy requirements that manufacturers only make and sell energy-efficient light emitting diode, or LED, light bulbs.
The Department of Energy says LED lights provide more light using less energy and last a lot longer than incandescent light bulbs.
Any manufacturer who violates the ban may face a max penalty of $542 per illegal light bulb made or sold.
