(Miami, FL) -- The National Weather Service in Miami is testing out new guidelines for determining heat advisories in South Florida. The agency is trying to lower the requirements for a heat advisory which currently stand at a feels-like temperature of 108F or higher for at least 2 hours and an excessive heat warning is declared with a heat Index of 113F or higher for at least 2 hours.
Under the new criteria, a heat advisory would be implemented when feels-like temperatures reach 105 degrees for at least two hours. An excessive heat warning would take effect when indices reach 110 degrees for multiple hours. Officials are testing out the new system in Miami-Dade County. If successful, the other counties in the area could start using it next year.
