A suspect is in custody after authorities say he tried to stab a United States congressman during a campaign event.
Representative Lee Zeldin of New York was giving a speech on bail reform when the man made his way through the crowd armed with what appeared to be a knife and lunged at the Republican lawmaker.
He was restrained by bystanders until he could be taken into custody. Zeldin, a candidate for governor of New York, and his staff are all okay, according to a statement form a spokesperson.
The suspect, David Jakubonis, was charged with attempted assault and released on his own recognizance.
