The richest man in the world saw his fortune blast off in 2020, much like his SpaceX rocket that was launched last night from Cape Canaveral.
Elon Musk became the richest person in the world, beating Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Musk's fortunes blossomed with the surge in stock price from Tesla. Musk is now worth more than $185-billion while Amazon's Bezos is worth "only" $184-billion. Bezos's bottom line took a hit a few years ago due to his divorce, but the pandemic has pushed Amazon stock to record highs.
To put Musk's meteoric rise into perspective, he started 2020 worth $27-billion and barely made the list of the top 50 richest people. Tesla's stock price increased nine-fold over the past year.
In response to his new title, Musk took to Twitter saying "How strange" and "Well, back to work."
