Rio Dance Schools Cancel Carnival

The parades, the outfits, the dancing!

None of it will happen in the streets of Rio de Janeiro as the annual Carnival parade has been canceled due to the pandemic.

The League of Samba Schools announced Thursday night that they won't be able to hold the parades safely next February.

The league may be ahead of city leaders who have not officially canceled street parties, but said that any big events were unlikely until a vaccine was widely available.

Records show the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Rio a day after Carnival festivities ended in February.

It's been more than a century since the last time Carnival was canceled. in 1912, the party was called off because of the death of the foreign relations minister.

New Year's Eve events in Rio have already been called off for 2021.

Brazil has been hit hard by the coronavirus. More than 139,000 people have died from the virus there, second only to the United States.
