It's no wonder we wait at the DMV for so long, their employees are sleeping on the job.
This may not be the case at every DMV in California, even though it sure does feel like it, but it is exactly what happened at one Bay Area DMV.
One state Department of Motor Vehicles worker slept for at least three hours a day on the job for nearly four years. According to an audit report, the DMV worker, who has not been named, napped at her desk for an estimated 2,200 hours of work time between February 2014 and December 2017, costing the state more than $40,000 and slowed down processing times.
The employee works as a data operator who on average should be processing 560 documents a day but she averaged only 200 documents daily. Fellow employees at the DMV told auditors that those documents were often error-ridden.
The supervisors of the employee noted in her performance evaluations that she often slept on the job but failed to discipline her.
