Trump Moves His Permanent Residence From New York to Florida

Donald Trump Hosts Chinese President Xi Jinping At Mar-A-Lago

The New York Times reported Thursday that longtime New Yorker President Donald Trump had moved his official permanent residence out of Manhattan in late September, changing it to Palm Beach, Florida, according to documents filed with the Palm Beach County Circuit Court.

Trump filed what's known as a "declaration of domicile" with the Circuit Court that renouncing his residence in New York and listed his new address at his Mar-a-Lago resort. First Lady Melania Trump also filed documents changing her primary residence away from Trump Tower in New York City to Palm Beach in an identical document, the Times said in its report. His address at the White House as well as at his private golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, were also listed among his "other places of abode."

President Trump confirmed the New York Times' reporting in a series of tweets sent Thursday evening, writing that he made the decision because he'd been "treated very badly by the political leaders of both the city and state."

"1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the White House, is the place I have come to love and will stay for, hopefully, another 5 years as we MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, but my family and I will be making Palm Beach, Florida, our Permanent Residence," Trump tweeted. "I cherish New York, and the people of...New York, and always will, but unfortunately, despite the fact that I pay millions of dollars in city, state and local taxes each year, I have been treated very badly by the political leaders of both the city and state. Few have been treated worse. I hated having to make....this decision, but in the end it will be best for all concerned. As President, I will always be there to help New York and the great people of New York. It will always have a special place in my heart!"

The Governor of New York, Andrew M. Cuomo tweeted "Good riddance" in response to the news, writing that "It’s not like @realDonaldTrump paid taxes here anyway... He’s all yours, Florida."

“Everyday Americans don’t own resorts they can list as alternative addresses to tinker with their tax liability," Rep. Nita Lowey, D- N.Y., tweeted. "Middle-class families today face more tax burdens while the president dodges the consequences of the Republican tax bill.”

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio also piled on, writing "Don’t let the door hit you on the way out or whatever."

The Times report points out that Florida, notably, does not have a state income or inheritance tax and that Trump could see significant tax implications for the move. By moving to Florida, Trump will New York state's top tax rate of 9% and New York City's top rate of 4%. New York also imposes a 16% inheritance tax on estates larger than $10.1 million.
