Trump Dismisses Jimmy Carter As 'Nice Guy' But 'Terrible President'

President Donald Trump has dismissed comments made by former President Jimmy Carter, calling him a "nice man" but a "terrible president."

During an appearance at a Virginia forum on human rights hosted by The Carter Center, the former president told the crowd that a full investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election would show Trump did not win, questioning the legitimacy of Trump's presidency.

Following a meeting with world leaders in Japan at the G-20 summit, Trump told reporters that "He's a nice man, he was a terrible president. He’s a Democrat and it’s a typical talking point."

Carter was being "loyal to the Democrats" Trump said, "as everybody now understands, I won not because of Russia, not because of anybody but myself."

Carter was asked by historian Jon Meacham about Russian meddling in the 2016 election, confirmed by the report issued by former special counsel, Robert Mueller.

"The president himself should condemn it, admit that it happened," Carter said. "There's no doubt that the Russians did interfere in the election. And I think the interference, although not yet quantified, if fully investigated, would show that Trump didn't actually win the election in 2016, he lost the election, and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf."

Meacham asked if Carter believed Trump was an illegitimate president.

"Based on what I just said, which I can't retract," Carter said.

Mueller's report revealed that some members of Trump's campaign showed interest in receiving help from Russia during the 2016 campaign, but that it did not rise to the level of a crime.

Trump, who is in Japan this week attending the G-20 summit, told reporters that he was surprised to hear Carter had made those comments, even as he "felt bad" for the former president.

"He’s been trashed within his own party, he’s been badly trashed. I felt bad for him because you look over the years, his party has virtually … he’s like the forgotten president," Trump said. "And I understand why they say that."

"He was not a good president. Looked at what happened with Iran – that was a disaster. What Iran did to him, they tied him in knots. The reason Ronald Reagan probably became president," Trump added.
