President Trump Calls For 'Strong Barrier' During Visit To US-Mexico Border

President Donald Trump continued his campaign to convince Congress to fund construction of a border wall during a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump said that the border wall would deter human trafficking and make it more difficult for cartels to smuggle illegal drugs into the United States.

“If we had a barrier of any kind, a powerful barrier, whether it’s steel or concrete...We would stop it cold,” Trump said.

The president blasted Democratic lawmakers who have declared that building a wall is immoral and will not solve the problems caused by illegal immigration.

"They say a wall is medieval. Well, so is a wheel," Trump said. "There are some things that work, you know what? A wheel works, and a wall works."

Trump said that he is open to the idea of declaring a national emergency to build the wall if he is unable to strike a deal with Democrats to fund the construction and re-open the government.
