FLORIDA - A new statewide poll shows majority support for Florida Amendment 3, a proposed constitutional amendment that would expand the homestead property tax exemption.
The NBC6 and Telemundo Station Group poll, conducted by Mason-Dixon, found 55% of likely voters support the measure. Another 26% oppose it, while 19% remain undecided.
Florida constitutional amendments require at least 60% approval to pass, meaning the proposal would currently fall short despite receiving support from more than half of respondents.
If approved in the November 3 election, Amendment 3 would increase the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028.
Support varied by political affiliation. Republicans backed the amendment 74% to 13%, while Democrats opposed it 43% to 36%. Independent voters supported the measure 43% to 29%.
The poll also found differences by demographic group. Men supported Amendment 3 at 59%, compared with 51% among women.
White voters supported the measure 58% to 22%, while Hispanic voters backed it 58% to 31%. Black voters opposed the amendment 42% to 33%.
Among supporters, 49% said property taxes are too high. Others cited government spending and the rising cost of living.
Among opponents, 55% said they were concerned the amendment could reduce local services.
The survey included 625 registered Florida voters likely to vote in November and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
