FLORIDA - A new national analysis from Lending Tree ranks every state by accident rates, DUIs, speeding and citations to determine where the safest and most dangerous drivers live.
A new study analyzing tens of millions of auto insurance inquiries from 2025 outlines which states saw the highest and lowest rates of traffic incidents.
Researchers reviewed accident reports, DUIs, speeding violations and general citations between January and September to determine incident totals per 1,000 drivers.
North Dakota recorded the most overall incidents with 64 per 1,000 drivers, the highest rate in the country.
The state also reported the highest DUI frequency at 3.7 per 1,000 drivers and the highest speeding rate at 11.9.
New Jersey ranked second with 58.8 incidents per 1,000 drivers, followed by Utah at 54.6.
Michigan had the lowest overall incident rate at 20.9, making it the state with the safest drivers.
Florida and Colorado followed with incident rates of 23.1 and 23.7.

New Jersey posted the highest accident rate with 31.5 crashes per 1,000 drivers.
Rhode Island recorded 29 and California reported 28.1.
Michigan had the lowest accident rate at 10.
Colorado and Florida followed with 11.7 and 11.9.
DUI rates varied significantly by region.
California recorded the second highest DUI rate at 3.5 and Minnesota reported 2.8.
Nine states had DUI rates below 1.
Florida had the lowest at 0.4 followed by Illinois, Mississippi and West Virginia at 0.6.
Speeding rates were also uneven across the country.
After North Dakota, Utah recorded 9.4 speeding incidents per 1,000 drivers and Vermont reported 7.7.
New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York recorded the lowest speeding rates at 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4.
