Miami-Dade, FL - Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz released new information on Saturday following the death of Deputy Devin Jaramillo, who was fatally shot the previous day while responding to a traffic crash.

The incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Friday on Southwest 128th Street after Jaramillo was dispatched to evaluate a minor collision.

During a press briefing at the sheriff’s office, Cordero-Stutz addressed public speculation and stated the incident was not an ambush.

She explained that the call was a standard assignment, and there was no known connection between Jaramillo and the subject involved in the crash.

According to the sheriff, a verbal dispute allegedly developed between the deputy and the driver while Jaramillo was conducting his investigation.

The confrontation allegedly escalated into physical contact, during which the subject allegedly fought with Jaramillo and gained control of his firearm.

The subject allegedly shot the deputy several times before returning to his own vehicle, where he allegedly took his own life.

The individual identified by authorities as the shooter was 21-year-old Steven David Rustrian.

A second person involved in the initial crash was detained but later released without charges, the sheriff said.

Witnesses called 911 immediately after shots were heard.

Responding deputies performed first aid until Jaramillo was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Coral Gables Police, Florida Highway Patrol, and the FBI, were present at the scene.

Further details, including funeral arrangements, are expected to be released by officials.
