Miami-Dade Election Results Are Here

Another round of voting will be needed to determine Miami's next mayor.

Eileen Higgins and Emilio Gonzalez advanced to a runoff yesterday after they finished in the top two, but no one got a majority. Former county commissioner Higgins got the most votes at about 36 percent, and former city manager Gonzalez got about 20 percent.

The runoff will take place December 9th.

A runoff will also be needed in the District 3 commission race between former Commissioner Frank Carollo and Rolando Escalona. In District 5, Christine King won with over 84 percent of the vote.

Changes are coming to Miami's constitution.

Voters weighed in yesterday on four ballot referendums. The first was to form a charter review commission that would meet every 10 years. That passed.

Voters, though, rejected Referendum Two that would have made it easier for the city to sell some of its land.

Voters banned gerrymandering by passing Referendum Three and establishing a citizens' redistricting committee.

Voters also passed Referendum Four that imposes a two-term limit for elected officials.

Previously, people were limited to two consecutive terms, but they could run again after sitting out a term.

Hialeah's new mayor is making history. Bryan Calvo won yesterday's election, and he'll be the city's youngest mayor ever. The 27-year-old beat Interim Mayor Jackie Garcia-Roves with about 53 percent of the vote.

There were also four city council seats on the ballot. Interim Councilwoman Melinda De La Vega won the Group 6 race, and Luis Rodriguez was reelected to Group 7. Group 3 is headed to a runoff between Gelien Perez and Jessica Castillo.

There will also be a runoff in Group 4 between Willy Marrero and Javier Morejon.

Miami Beach's mayor is getting another term. Steven Meiner was reelected yesterday to his second term. He beat City Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez with 51 percent of the vote. Meiner says his sole goal is to make Miami beach the best and safest city in America, and we're getting there.
