Miami-Dade, FL - A network of appointment scalpers exploiting Miami-Dade’s DMV system could soon face legal consequences.

Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez uncovered a scheme where individuals use fake accounts and bots to secure free appointment slots, later selling them for $25 to $250.

Fernandez, speaking Tuesday, emphasized the urgency of the issue.

“This is a victory for Miami-Dade residents. We are introducing legislation to stop this fraudulent practice.”

The ordinance, backed by Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera, aims to end appointment resales that have contributed to long wait times.

This issue is not new.

In 2022, when the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles department managed the DMV, similar scalping was reported.

Videos from Only in Dade captured long lines as frustrated residents struggled to secure appointments.

The proposed Miami-Dade ordinance would impose a $500 fine or up to 60 days in jail for those caught selling appointments.

While not currently illegal, Fernandez is working with law enforcement to integrate AI and facial recognition technology to prevent future abuse.

The Miami-Dade County Commission will hold a second reading and vote on April 1st.
