Port St. Lucie, FL - A group of five undocumented immigrants is facing child neglect charges after a 1-year-old boy was found walking alone in the middle of a street in Port St. Lucie.
Authorities say, the incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Friday in the 800 block of Southwest Darwin Boulevard.
Police were called after multiple drivers reported seeing a young child wandering in traffic.
Police traced the child back to a home in the 500 block of Southwest Sara Boulevard, where they found a woman, her partner, her brother, and a 4-month-old girl.
According to investigators, the woman was in a bedroom feeding the infant while the other two adults were in another room, allegedly supervising the toddler.
The child reportedly exited through an open rear sliding glass door while one of the adults was grilling outside.
Authorities said the home had no electricity, and they found spoiled food in the refrigerator and freezer.
There was little to no furniture, and the children appeared to be sleeping on mattresses placed directly on the floor.
While officers were at the scene, a neighbor arrived with a 7-year-old boy, explaining that they regularly took him to and from school and that he also lived in the home.
Shortly after, two additional adults returned to the residence.
All three children were taken to a local hospital, where some displayed signs of dehydration and lethargy, though no physical abuse was reported.
They are now in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. Authorities believe all three children were born in the United States after the adults originally migrated to Arizona.
A neighbor expressed distress upon learning about the children's living conditions.
The five adults were arrested on child neglect charges and are being held at the St. Lucie County Jail without bond as they await transfer to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.
Authorities continue to investigate the case.
