PBSO Says It Takes Safety Seriously As South Florida Fair Kicks Off

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw says something like what happened in New Orleans on New Year's morning won't happen here.

That's where a terrorist was able to drive a truck through a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing 14 people.

"You can believe one thing...we pay a lot of attention to checkpoints and barriers. It's like over at Mar-a-Lago. You're not driving around anything there. I can guarantee you 100 percent you will not drive through them and you will not drive around them."

We brought the topic up to the sheriff as the South Florida Fair kicks off today.

"The access is limited by gates so you can't get into the venue where people are at the fair. We've got a lot of deputies out there. It's very tough to get a vehicle past the buildings and past the barriers that are there so that's not too big of a concern to us."

Bradshaw says that when they do need to set up barricades for high profile events, they use...

"Heavy duty cement barricades. You have to have a front end loader to actually pick it up and put it over there. There's no vehicle coming across there."

Plenty of deputies will be on hand to deal with any issues that may crop up and the fair is again banning guests under the age of 18 without adult supervision from entering the event on Friday and Saturday nights. Also, purchase of admission AND a ride wristband is required for anyone between the ages of 11 and 17.
