Miami, FL - A Miami mother faces serious charges after her infant son was hospitalized and found to have cocaine in his system.

A Miami mother is facing child neglect charges after her 5-month-old son tested positive for cocaine during a hospital visit, police reported.

The incident unfolded on January 4, when the infant was taken to the hospital after suffering a fall.

During the medical evaluation, tests revealed that the child had an undetermined amount of cocaine in his system, according to an arrest report.

A subsequent drug test conducted by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) revealed the mother also tested positive for cocaine.

The mother was arrested and booked into jail on Wednesday on a charge of child neglect without great bodily harm.

During a court appearance on Thursday, Judge Mindy Glazer appointed her a public defender and issued a no-contact order between the mother and her child.

The mother informed the court that the baby was currently in the custody of her own mother.

In court, Judge Glazer emphasized the need for the mother to address her substance abuse issues.

“Your dependency court judge is going to say you need to make a choice: the drugs or your baby. Stop using, get clean, or they’ll find a home for your child in a safe environment. It’s a decision you need to make, and maybe you need to get some drug counseling,” Glazer said.

The judge granted the mother pretrial release with an alternate bond set at $2,500.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding January 4th's incident.
