A Treasure Coast top cop is railing against distracted driving. This after a St. Lucie County deputy was struck by a vehicle along I-95.

Sheriff Keith Pearson says Deputy Jamie Patterson was pulling over to remove a bumper from the traffic lanes in Fort Pierce yesterday when a 42-year old driver slammed into her patrol vehicle.

He believes that man was distracted.

"Regardless of whether it's under the influence or you're distracted. Texting and driving is just as dangerous as driving under the influence. You're not paying attention. You're not in full control of your vehicle."

He says the patrol vehicle, a large pickup truck, had it's blue lights flashing at the time.

The deputy and the driver were taken to the hospital and both will be okay.

For now, the driver faces a charge of violating Florida's "Move Over" law.
