Today Marks The 25th Anniversary Of The Elian Gonzalez Custody Battle

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Elian Gonzalez saga. Cuban expert Andy Gomez says there should have never been a tug-of-war over the then-five-year-old who was found drifting off the Fort Lauderdale coast. Elian was at the center of a seven-month-long international custody battle because he was granted asylum under U-S refugee rules at the time and went to live with his great uncle in Miami. His father, who had international law on his side, got help from then-President Fidel Castro to get him back. Many Cuban Americans had hoped to humiliate Castro, but their plan backfired.
