FLORIDA - A new specialty license plate inspired by Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville" song is now available for purchase in Florida, with proceeds benefiting a charity founded by the iconic singer-songwriter.
The "Margaritaville" license plate, inspired by Buffett's famous song, became available for purchase on October 1st.
Priced at $25 in addition to regular registration fees, the "Margaritaville" plate can be ordered online or through local DMV offices.
Proceeds from the sales will benefit Singing for Change, a charity founded by Buffett, and will support Florida nonprofits assisting victims of hurricanes and other disasters.
State Senator Gayle Harrell, who sponsored one of the bills leading to the creation of the license plate, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Margaritaville is just what Florida is all about.
Jimmy Buffett is the icon of Florida. No one represents the open sun, beaches, music more than Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville."
The Florida Legislature has already honored Buffett by designating August 30th as "Jimmy Buffett Day" and naming portions of A1A in several counties as the "Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway."
In addition, a pop-up tribute appeared in the Florida Keys following Buffett's passing last year, with fans adding cardboard letters to the Key West International Airport sign to create the name "Key West Jimmy Buffett International Airport."
While the letters were removed shortly after being discovered, the gesture sparked a movement among locals who now advocate for the permanent renaming of the airport in Buffett's honor.
