South Miami, FL - Drivers in South Miami are being warned to slow down in school zones or face hefty fines.
Starting Wednesday, speed cameras will be activated in designated areas, capturing license plates of vehicles exceeding the 15 mph speed limit.
Violators can expect to receive a $100 citation.
The cameras will be active 30 minutes before, during, and after school hours.
South Miami Police have identified several high-risk school zones for enhanced enforcement, including Ludlam Elementary, South Miami K-8 Center, Somerset Academy, South Miami Charter School, South Miami Middle School, Epiphany Catholic School, and Mandelstam School.
Students and residents have expressed support for the new speed cameras, citing safety concerns.
In addition to speed enforcement, new AI-powered cameras are being used to detect drivers who fail to stop for school buses with their stop arms extended.
These cameras, known as "AVA," have been installed on all 1,000 county school buses.
Miami-Dade has issued more than 11,500 violations for passing school buses, resulting in a $225 fine.
