A proposed constitutional amendment could lead to legalized recreational marijuana in Florida and one city wants to get ahead of that possibility.

Stuart city leaders plan to vote next month on an ordinance that would ban recreational marijuana shops from opening in the downtown area. Merchants tell CBS 12 News that they agree with that move.

"I just think it might not bring the right people to downtown," Girls Downtown manager Lori Gallucci said.

She adds that there isn't enough parking so that would be a key issue as well.

"It's not pleasant smelling and it just doesn't go, to me, with the whole wholesome downtown," Argento Jewelry owner Liliann Peterson added.

The city manager says pot shops would not be banned from other areas of Stuart.

The amendment needs 60 percent to vote.
