Palm Bay, FL - A 24-year-old Florida man is facing multiple charges after allegedly vandalizing a local church and assaulting a police officer with a metal Stanley cup on Sunday.
According to the Palm Bay Police Department, Timothy Bornman broke into the church shortly before 5:20 p.m. and caused extensive damage estimated in the thousands of dollars.
Authorities believe Bornman accessed a shed on the property before entering the church, retrieving a sledgehammer in the process.
The affidavit states Bornman used the sledgehammer to forcibly enter the church and "damage everything in sight."
Responding officers arrived to find Bornman in the church parking lot, wielding a metal Stanley cup while yelling and cursing at church members.
The affidavit details that Bornman threatened the officers upon their arrival.
Despite commands to surrender, Bornman reportedly approached an officer aggressively and attempted to strike him in the head with the cup.
The officer dodged the blow but sustained a hit to the shoulder.
Bornman then attempted to flee the scene, prompting officers to deploy a stun gun.
A brief struggle ensued before Bornman was apprehended and taken into custody.
The arrest affidavit details Bornman admitting to the break-in and vandalism, claiming the church had "stolen everything from him."
Bornman was transported to a local hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Brevard County Jail.
He faces charges of burglary of an unoccupied structure, criminal mischief in a place of worship, battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest with violence.
