One Florida school district is looking into spending 300-thousand dollars on a cell phone storage plan for students.
The idea is to buy special pouches for each student where they would keep their phones locked throughout the school day.
However, Martin County School Board member Marsha Powers spoke out against the proposal during Tuesday's budget workshop.
"I'm not a fan of the cell phone initiative. I feel very strongly that we should have zero, kids should not have their cell phones out. I don't know we as a district should be creating situations where cell phones could possibly be damaged. If they bring their phone it should be in their backpack, turned off."
The district's Chief Financial Officer says if they move forward with the plan, he wants the money to come from millage paid by property owners in the community.
It would be tried out in seven middle and high schools, but no decision was made.
Schools considered in the phone pouches include:
Hidden Oaks Middle School
Stuart Middle School
Murray Middle School
Indiantown Middle School
South Fork High School
Jensen Beach High School
Martin County High School
