Biden Visits Tampa For An Abortion Campaign Rally

TAMPA -- President Biden came to red-shifting Florida to hold a campaign rally Tuesday, and the only topic was abortion rights.

Biden called Florida's six-week abortion law that takes effect next week "extreme" and said abortion rights should be guaranteed nationwide, saying "it's not about state's rights, it's about women's rights," he told supporters at Hillsborough Community College's Dale Mabry campus.

Biden was joined by Tampa congresswoman Kathy Castor and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who is running for the Democratic nomination to face Senator Rick Scott in November.

The president said state abortion laws that have gone into effect since the Dobbs decision in 2022 have caused "pain and cruelty". He blamed former President Trump for the Dobbs decision returning the issue to the states. Trump has said that he supports states deciding abortion issues and has not endorsed federal legislation.

Governor DeSantis anticipated Biden's remarks at an appearance in Naples, saying Floridians "aren't buying what Biden is selling." He also denounced the abortion rights amendment on the November ballot.

Demonstrators supporting the six-week abortion law greeted the presidential visit. There were also pro-Palestinian protests greeting Biden.
