Miami Gardens, FL - A South Florida police sergeant was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving early Thursday morning.
Authorities say the arrest occurred when a Miami Gardens officer spotted a white Mercedes-Benz speeding northbound on Northwest Second Avenue near 191st Street.
The vehicle then disregarded two red lights, prompting the officer to pull the vehicle over near 202nd Terrace.
The arresting officer reported observing signs of intoxication in the driver, identified as Miami Gardens Police Sergeant Andrea Smith.
Authorities say Smith had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of alcohol emanating from her person.
The officer also noted erratic driving behavior, which led them to draw their service weapon upon approaching the vehicle.
Smith reportedly refused to comply with field sobriety tests and Breathalyzer requests before being taken into custody.
As of Thursday morning, she remained jailed at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $1,150 bond.
Miami Gardens Police Chief Delma Noel-Pratt released a statement following Smith’s arrest, stating “Our officers are held to the highest standards, both on and off duty. This individual's actions do not reflect the values of our agency. Sergeant Smith will be relieved of duty while due process is followed."
