Delray Beach Pride Crosswalk Vandalized, Suspect Charged

Delray Beach, FL - Delray Beach authorities have arrested a 19-year-old man for allegedly damaging the LGBTQ Pride crosswalk through reckless driving earlier this month.

Surveillance footage released by the police department shows a pickup truck with a large flag performing burnouts on the crosswalk, located at the intersection of Northeast First Street and Second Avenue.

This act inflicted significant damage to the colorful artwork, representing a symbol of unity and inclusivity for the local LGBTQ community.

"This reckless action was not only destructive but also targeted a significant symbol of our community," Delray Beach Police stated in a press release. "Thanks to the help of concerned citizens and their video evidence, we were able to identify and apprehend the suspect."

Dylan Brewer, 19, of Clearwater, Florida, surrendered to authorities on Monday and was released the following day after posting a $5,250 bond.

He faces charges of felony criminal mischief and reckless driving.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time the Pride crosswalk has been vandalized.

In 2021, a similar incident involving burnouts led to the conviction of Alexander Jerich, who received probation and community service.

This repeated targeting of the crosswalk highlights the importance of fostering tolerance and respect for diversity.

Residents in Delray Beach have expressed hope that these incidents will not deter the community from celebrating the values represented by the LGBTQ Pride symbol.

The investigation remains ongoing, and Delray Beach Police encourage anyone with additional information to come forward.
